My Ancestor John Blair
  at 11:09 AM

The oldest ancestor that we have a record of was John Blair. His name is on the San Jacinto Monument at Houston, Texas. Letters written during the Civil War are still kept with the Louis Cox family heirlooms. The following is part of a letter from Co.. Blair to his wife, Lizzie, written July 11, 1863 from Camp near Delhi, Louisiana:

"My Dearest Lizzie,

I am proud to say that I have got my desk up with me at last. And I think I can write with a little more ease. I have no war news of any importance to write you. Only what you have heard by this time---Vicksburg is now in possession of the enemy. It was surrendered on the evening of the 3rd July. And the federals took possession on the 4th. And I have no doubt but that they had a fine dinner... it has caused a considerable gloom to hang over the Southern Confederacy. And what will become of our Sunny South. I am not able to say..."

The San Jacinto Museum of History is located inside the base of the monument, and focuses on the history of the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas culture and heritage.

We have recently found out that one of my husband's ancestors was also at the Battle of San Jacinto. His older cousin has all the info, but she has been in and out of the hospital lately, so we haven't been able to find out anymore--never thought about going down to the monument and reading the names. His cousin is a card carrying member of the Daughters of Texas Republic(Independence). If I can find out who his ancestor was, then my two will also get to be members--no benefits with being a member, except for being able to say that you're a member---I think my two would be pleased, they are proud Texans.

By the way, this is Deb posting the previous comment, not my daughter Shana. She gave me her old tablet, and I still haven't figured out how to change some things over lol
